Report: Chelsea now want to sign one of Pep Guardiola's 'favourite' players from Barcelona

Chelsea and Newcastle United are in the market to sign a new centre-back in the January transfer window.

The two Premier League clubs have had contrasting starts to the new season. Chelsea are flying and are currently second in the table, while Newcastle are 12th.

New signings in the winter window could push the two English sides closer to achieving their objectives this season.

If Football transfers are to be believed, they are eyeing a move to sign the same player.

Chelsea and Newcastle want to sign Eric Garcia from Barcelona

Chelsea and Newcastle could both do with reinforcements at the back.

Enzo Maresca recently claimed that the Blues will not win the Premier League title because of the kind of goals they concede. That suggests he isn’t happy with his defence.

Newcastle, on the other hand, really wanted to sign Marc Guehi in the summer, but Crystal Palace stood firm on their demands and managed to keep hold of him in the end.

Football Transfers claim that the two clubs are in the market for a new centre-half, and Barcelona’s Eric Garcia is a target for both sides.

The report says that Barcelona are facing major financial problems heading into the winter window and are currently even struggling to register Dani Olmo.

That is why they are ready to sell Garcia for a cut-price fee of €25 million (£20.6m).

It remains to be seen if either Chelsea are Newcastle will act on their interest once the window opens in January.

What Pep Guardiola once said about Eric Garcia

Garcia spent four years at Manchester City and got the chance to work with Pep Guardiola there.

The defender only played 35 games for the current Premier League champions, but he regularly trained with the first team.

Guardiola wanted Garcia to stay in 2021, but he still hailed his compatriot as one of his ‘favourite’ players when he decided to leave the club for Barcelona.

He told Sky Sports in April 2021: “There are players even who don’t play any matches. I think, for example, of Eric Garcia who is one of my favourite players.

“I would love to have 15 Eric Garcias for the way he conducts his behaviour.

“He is always thinking of the team. He’s always a good face in the good or bad moments. He helps the manager and the backroom staff all the time.”
