A closer look at some of the latest high profile Premier League transfer rumours.

The Premier League is back this weekend for the final games before Christmas Day. All but four clubs will then spring back into action for a mouthwatering Boxing Day bonanza, featuring some interesting match-ups.

After the 26th and 27th, the new year will be close to rolling in and the January window will be open for business. Rumours have been coming thick and fast over the last few weeks, so let’s take a look at some of them.

Ex-scout drops update on Liverpool contract situation

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has provided some insight into Liverpool’s current contract situation with the three players approaching the end of their contracts. Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are ‘expected’ to sign extensions with the club but Trent Alexander-Arnold remains a grey area.

“I expect both of them will sign new contracts. There are still a few issues to iron out, especially with Salah, when it comes to the length of the deal and the money involved, so it’s not done yet. But I’m told there’s a positive feeling about things and they’re not worried at the moment,” Brown told Football Insider.

“Things are less certain with Alexander-Arnold, I think that’s much more up in the air. Real Madrid are obviously still keen and I think he’s a bit torn between the two clubs. Getting both Salah and Van Dijk tied down will be a major boost for Liverpool during their title challenge, so they’ll want it all wrapped up before the end of the season.

“But in terms of agreeing any moves away, that certainly won’t happen in January even if they haven’t signed with Liverpool yet. Like I say, nothing is completed or signed, but there’s a feeling both of them will stay.”

The 3AM Verdict: Hearing two of the three players are likely to sign new contracts will be extremely comforting for Liverpool but the idea oflosing Alexander-Arnold will undoubtedly stick in their throats. As a player who made it his mission to captain the Reds one day, it will be a huge disappointment to see him leave at such a young age. After the Reds’ impressive win over Real Madrid recently, Liverpool being significantly above them in theChampions League, and the Spanish side locked in a three-way battle for the La Liga title, many will be wondering how much of a ‘step up’ to silverware a move to Madrid would be. Especially if Liverpool win a trophy this season.

Romano provides update on United star exit links

Speculation has been bubbling over the future of Alejandro Garnacho after he was left out of the team that beat Manchester City in the derby recently. Atlético Madrid have reportedly registered interest in signing the Argentine international but Fabrizio Romano offered an update on the situation.

In his GiveMeSport newsletter, the transfer expert has claimed that it is ‘all quiet around Garnacho’ at this moment in time.

“No concrete talks taking place — he shares the same agent with Amad, who's close to extending his contract, so relationship is very good.”

Garnacho is under contract at Manchester United until 2028, so if United are not interested in selling, it will cost a lot of money to convince them. However, the latest general reports on United’s transfer interest suggest Ruben Amorim is ready to oversee some significant change within the ranks.

The 3AM Verdict: As things stand, all signs are pointing toMarcus Rashford leaving the club, ending a significant era at Old Trafford. While the rumours have also been swirling around Garnacho, it seems more likely that the 20-year-old will remain where he is, at least in the immediate anyway. The versatile forward has been a key performer for the Reds when they’ve needed him and his price tag will undoubtedly rise with more impressive performances, meaning a big pay day could be further along the horizon for United.
