Gary Neville has been vocal about Marcus Rashford's situation at Manchester United, stating that the forward has not lived up to the 'non-negotiables' set by interim manager Ruben Amorim.
After being left out of the squad for the Manchester derby, Rashford's future at Old Trafford seems uncertain, with the player himself open to moving away from his childhood team.
Now a Champions League club and a threat in the Premier League, Aston Villa will continue to be thrown into conversations around players’ futures.
It’s therefore no surprise to see Villa loosely linked with Rashford, who appears to be on the way out of Manchester United. The forward was left out of Ruben Amorim’s squad to face Manchester rivals City last weekend and has since confirmed to journalist Henry Winter that he would like to leave United for pastures new.
"For me, personally, I'm ready for a new challenge and the next steps," said Rashford. "When I leave it's going to be no hard feelings. You're not going to have any negative comments from me about Manchester United. That's me. I will always be a Red."
Neville, speaking to Sky Sports, highlighted the issues: "I don't know about their long-term future but what's really clear is he's [Amorim] mentioned engaging with team-mates. He's mentioned standards. So, he's given us clues as to what's happened over the last few days that they've been moping. Not doing their bit around the training ground, engaging with their teammates properly, standards in training."
"And he's gone 'no, I'm not having it, I'm not accepting it.' And good on him because for far too long we've seen players mope around that pitch and still continue to get a game. 'Oh he's on the bench' No. It's got to be non-negotiable. If you don't give your all in your job, you're gone."
Neville also offered advice to Rashford amidst the speculation: "Where should Rashford go? Share your thoughts in the comments belowAnd while it looks as though Rashford is destined for the Old Trafford exit door, Neville still had some valuable advice for the forward in the meantime. There is still two weeks until the January transfer window opens."
With the January transfer window looming, Neville's guidance could prove crucial for Rashford's next steps, reports the Mirror.
"We've been sat in this studio for years as ex-Man United players saying, 'Give your absolute all', and players haven't been running back," he commented on Sky Sports. "We've seen Rashford and Garnacho stand on that left and right wing and not chase back when full-backs have gone past them and still stay on the pitch. No more."
"I want Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho to come back stronger, take the message that they've been given by training at the training ground this morning on a Sunday with no-one else there. I want them to take this in the right spirit and become the very best players for Manchester United."
With United gearing up for their Carabao Cup clash against Spurs on Thursday evening, boss Amorim has suggested Rashford may be in line for a comeback.
