Carlton Palmer has said that Leeds United should tie Illan Meslier down to a new contract and his comments seem worryingly unjust.
Meslier has been the focus of attention at Elland Road this season for a number of comical errors leading to goals with a summer exit a possibility either abroad or to the Premier League.
Links to Liverpool goalkeeper Caiomhin Kelleher emerged in recent days (TEAMtalk) as Leeds look to improve in the ‘keeping department although that deal is understood to only be a possibility if the Whites achieve promotion.
With that said, Palmer’s comments to Football League World claiming Meslier should be awarded a new contract are ludicrous and there has been little indication from the Frenchman for that to be a decision worth making.
Leeds United need to cash in on Illan Meslier
Not only is Meslier one of the worst-performing ‘keepers in the league, his stats have him as the third worst in Europe.

While that seems unlikely, the stats for the Frenchman have been increasingly disappointing, having prevented -1.37 goals this season (FotMob).
He has been a weak spot of a largely successful Leeds squad in the current campaign and his continued reputation of making mistakes has cost Leeds on several occasions with four points dropped alone to Preston and Sunderland.

An exit in January is not only a possibility but should be the course of action and Stade Rennais could be the destination (JeunesFooteux).
One thing for certain is that Meslier should not be rewarded for his failure with a new contract despite what Palmer has said.
