Marc Cucurella was pleased to get on the scoresheet and contribute to another memorable win in the Conference League, after beating Shamrock Rovers 5-1 at the Bridge.
It was another impressive start in the competition from the Blues as Marc Guiu quickly racked up his tally, reaching three before the break and pouncing on defensive errors on multiple occasions to earn a first hat-trick as a Chelsea player.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall also etched his name onto the scoresheet during the opening period before Cucurella himself wrapped up the scoring with a clever finish with his right boot in the second half.
The full-back played another important role for the Blues against Rovers, popping up in positions all over the pitch as instructed by head coach Enzo Maresca, and he was particularly happy to make it two goals in two matches after converting against Brentford last time out.
‘We are very happy because we know these games are never easy,’ Cucurella opened.
‘We try in every game to have new ideas or different positions to attack the other team. We do a lot of work in training and then I try to do my best on the pitch. It’s about time and it’s a process.’
The 5-1 victory means that we maintain our 100 per cent record in the league phase of the Conference League heading into the knockout stages following notable away trips to places like Astana and memorable home wins like our 8-0 win over Noah. Reflecting on the six matches, the 26-year-old is hopeful of more to come in the competition.
He said: ‘Sometimes we had long travel, but we showed every week that we tried to do our best. We practised our good football because we wanted to win in front of our fans. We finished well and we need to continue in this way.
‘We know this competition is tough and we wanted another win tonight. We’re happy to get through this stage.’
Focusing on his own form recently, Marc is enjoying playing in Blue with his performance earning him admiration from the supporters.
‘I’m very happy,’ he explained. ‘I think in my first season it wasn’t easy but I tried my best, worked hard and waited for my moment. Now it’s a good moment for me and the team.
‘I think the manager and my team-mates have given me a lot confidence and I tried to help the team always. We’re really happy and we’re trying to continue in this way. It’s a long season but we are ready to do good things.’
Cucurella also saved a special mention for Josh Acheampong, who recently signed a new deal with the club, and all the talented emerging from Cobham who featured against Shamrock Rovers.
He added: ‘I think all the young players have a lot of talent and we try to be confident and help them show their qualities. We are happy for [Josh]. All of us are the same. We want to win every game.
‘We know it’s tough and we have a lot of games but we know we have a good team and squad with a lot of young players, so they can all help us in games.’
