Vitor Pereira’s time at Corinthians and Flamengo before becoming Wolves manager

While Pereira has faced current Premier League managers in his career, the 56-year-old has yet to manage an English club – until now.

Before spending time in Saudi Arabia, the coach managed in Brazil, taking charge of two colossal jobs: Corinthians and Flamengo.

To get the lowdown on Pereira’s time in South America, Molineux Newsspoke to Brazilian journalist Rogerio Amaral Junior to get an insight into the new Wolves manager.

Asked what the high point of Pereira’s stay in Brazil was, the Vamo Futebol writer detailed the coach’s 10-month stay at Corinthians.

“As incredible as it may seem, his high point was a second place finish in 2022 with Corinthians,” he explained.

“He commanded a team that didn’t have much expectation and still managed to take them to the final of the Copa do Brasil, losing only on penalties to a Flamengo team that had much better players.

“He had a good campaign in the Libertadores also with Corinthians, reaching the quarter-finals, something that hadn’t happened since 2012.”

The news of Pereira managing to take a squad short of inspiration to such heights will come as music to Wolves fans’ ears, with the new boss now aiming to make a statement at Molineux.

While Pereira’s time at Corinthians was celebrated, things quickly turned ugly for the 56-year-old, as Junior explained when talking us through the manager’s spell at Flamengo.

“At Flamengo, his work was very short. He was marked by losing three finals in a short period of time, but all in competitions of very low importance. A Brazilian Super Cup, an American Super Cup and the regional championship.”

Three defeats in finals was a low point in the manager’s career however, it wasn’t the most troubling part of his time in Brazil.

How Pereira is viewed in Brazil after Flamengo controversy

As Junior explained, Pereira’s spell at Corinthians was celebrated highly as the Sao Paulo club were desperate for the manager to stay at the end of his contract.

While the now Wolves boss had a stint to remember at the club, he’s now mildly frowned upon, due to how he jumped from job to job.

“He is seen as a good coach in Brazil, however, the way he left Corinthians for Flamengo was very frowned upon,” Junior cited.

“This is because he claimed that his mother-in-law had a health problem to leave Corinthians. A few days later he signed with Flamengo.

“Corinthians fans liked him a lot, but the episode was seen as a betrayal. Flamengo fans don’t miss him, but I personally believe he didn’t have enough time to do his job at Flamengo.”

Pereira’s stay in South America provided both highs and lows, with the Portuguese’s time in Brazil tarnished by the puzzling timing of his arrival at Flamengo – Joao Gomes’ former club.

In the West Midlands, the 56-year-old will have a clean slate to make himself a popular figure at Wolves, where he has a considerable job on his hands.
