Newcastle United are trying to manoeuvre around their lingering PSR problems.
While fans eagerly await the new year with the transfer window opening sporting director Paul Mitchell is plotting his strategy to overcome PSR which nearly handed Newcastle a points deduction in the summer.
The Magpies sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton much to the detriment of Toon boss Eddie Howe who was keen to keep them both at the club.
It’s no shock that since Newcastle’s historic takeover in October 2021, there are more high-quality players being linked with moves to Tyneside. With signings like Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali some of those links have become a reality.
Now, another highly thought-of player has been linked with a move up north and it’s looking likely that they could leave in the January transfer window.

Enzo Maresca doesn’t rule out Keirnan Dewsbury-Hall sale amid Newcastle United links
Keirnan Dewsbury-Hall signed for Chelsea in the summer after achieving promotion with Leicester but has struggled to play consistent first-team football under Enzo Maresca who he was managed by at the Foxes.
The 26-year-old has played just 55 minutes in the Premier League this season with the majority of his appearances coming in the Europa Conference League.
Newcastle are interested in Dewsbury-Hall (CaughtOffside) and it doesn’t come as a shock that Howe and Mitchell are looking at a Chelsea player.

Summer saw the signing of Lewis Hall and Newcastle’s concrete interest in Noni Madueke but a deal wouldn’t materialise.
Ben Jacobs asked Maresca about Dewsbury-Hall’s future, he said: “Unfortunately, I can’t say he won’t leave because anything can happen. I am not focused on January. We are very happy with the way he is working and his performance. We don’t want one of our players to leave.
“With Kiernan, it’s a question for him. If a player says he is not happy and wants to play more, we are not going to say you have to stay. We are happy with Kiernan, and then in January we will see.”
Dewsbury-Hall played against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup but didn’t make a lasting impression on the fans before being substituted in the 57th minute.
Newcastle United have good depth in midfield so other positions could be prioritised
Howe is fortunate enough to have a strong catalogue of players who can play in midfield. The three starting central midfielders Joelinton, Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes could be considered among the best in the league.
There is also the likes of Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff and even 18-year-old Lewis Miley who could come into the squad if need be.
Tonali scored a brace against Brentford and has truly come into his own at Newcastle while Guimaraes as captain looks to be working well.
If Dewsbury-Hall were to sign for Newcastle, he may suffer the same fate due to the quality Howe already has at his disposal in the middle.
