Former Manchester United and England goalkeeper Ben Foster believes Jacob Murphy “doesn’t deserve” criticism from Newcastle United supporters.
The winger kept his place against Leicester City following the 4-2 defeat to Brentford after creating both Toon goals. And when the Foxes came to St James’ Park on Saturday, Murphy justified his selection with a brace as Newcastle coasted to a 4-0 win.
Visibly emotional, the 29-year-old cupped his ears with both celebrations to fire a dig towards his critics. Murphy has come under fire during United’s sluggish start to the 2024-25 season.
Fans have loudly called for a new right-winger - a position Toon chiefs have not bought since the Saudi-backed takeover. Yankuba Minteh did arrive but was signed as a youth player before being sold to Brighton without kicking a ball in black-and-white stripes.

NewcastleWorld understands a right-sided attacker remains a top priority for the Magpies despite pursuing a centre-back over the summer. Murphy’s renaissance has, however, given Eddie Howe food for thought ahead of the January transfer window.
Speaking on his podcast, former Premier League goalkeeper Foster urged Newcastle fans to lay off the winger. He said: “Jacob Murphy, he scored two goals in the game. He genuinely could have scored five. He’s all over the shop. He’s just a workhorse for Newcastle.
“He was phenomenal. The overload that Newcastle had, they worked it so quickly, would get it across to him and he was in every single time. He’s a good lad. He doesn’t deserve it (stick from the fans), simple as that.”
