Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe needs to go back to the drawing board.
Sporting director Paul Mitchell will be put to the test in January after a lacklustre summer window which saw Newcastle’s approaches for Marc Guehi constantly knocked back and key players like Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh leave the club.
A focus on incoming players will need to be balanced with the ongoing battles with PSR which nearly handed Newcastle a points deduction ahead of the new season.
The club are treading on thin ice and will need to sell if they make any purchases in January. Newcastle want to make signings in January but would need to sell first.
However, the hope of signing one particular target has taken a big hit. A player Eddie Howe was incredibly fond of.

Brentford will not sell any players in the January transfer window
According to Standard Sport, Brentford are preparing for a quiet January transfer window with no incoming signings planned, unless an injury is suffered/
Newcastle want Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo as their main man on the right wing but the suggestion that there will be no signings suggests that the Bees will not be willing to part company with the 25-year-old easily.

The report also suggests that Brentford are more focused on the summer transfer window where they will have a good pot of money to spend thanks to the sale of former Newcastle striker Ivan Toney.
They would only enter the transfer market if they were forced to due to long-term injuries, Rico Henry has been missing all season after suffering an ACL injury against Newcastle last season.
Fans got a taste of Mbeumo in Newcastle’s win against Brentford on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup but it seems like that will be the closest they get to seeing him play at St James’ Park.
Who could Newcastle United sign instead of Bryan Mbuemo?
Newcastle won’t be short of right-wing targets this season as Howe looks to strengthen his squad.
The Magpies have been linked with PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko who has had a great season in Holland so far. Bakayoko would cost Newcastle £50m, a similar fee to Mbeumo.
The 21-year-old has scored five goals in the Eredivisie this season and has featured in all six of PSV’s Champions League games.
Alternatively, if Newcastle wanted to save money they could keep with what they already have. Jacob Murphy has had a turn in form as of late. He bagged a brace in Newcastle’s win against Leicester on Saturday.
