Millions of Brits will be plonked in front of their televisions on Christmas Day as the beloved sitcom Gavin and Stacey comes to an end. However, the Smithy/Nessa will they, won't they is only the second biggest mystery on Merseyside this Christmas.

Most Liverpool fans would much rather discover whether or not Mohamed Salah will sign a new contract or not. There has been rare glimpses behind the curtain from the Egyptian about his desires but all we know for certain is that, at present, Salah's appearance against Crystal Palace on May 25 will be his last for the club unless something changes.

As we continue to wait for official confirmation, the ECHO has taken a closer look at some of the biggest moments from this saga so far.

Salah's disappointment

On November 24, Salah set the ball in motion when he told reporters gathered outside Southampton's St Mary's Stadium that he felt more out than in at Liverpool. "Well, we are almost in December and I haven't received any offers yet to stay in the club," he explained.

"You know I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this.

"But in the end it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven't received anything yet about my future."

Carragher's fury

Little more than 24 hours after this statement, Jamie Carragher hit out at Salah for going against the club in public. "I must say I am very disappointed with Mo Salah," he told Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.

"Liverpool have Real Madrid midweek [in the Champions League] and Man City at the weekend. That's the story right now.

"If he keeps putting comments out, his agent puts out cryptic messages, that is selfish. That is thinking about themselves and not the football club."

Saudi Arabia truth and PSG links

Speculation started to build as to which club Salah could sign for if his time at Liverpool came to an end. It was reported in L'Equipe that PSG had sounded out the winger but their president Nasser Al-Khelaifi was quick to deny this possibility.

The Saudi Pro League has also been mentioned as a possibility for Salah but Sky Sports understands that while many clubs would be interested in signing Salah in the future, none are actively pursuing him at present.

Liverpool approach

This month, The Athletic reported that after all the uncertainty a contract had been tabled to Salah. The ECHO understands the Egyptian wants to stay and that his agent is negotiating with the club to make that happen.

Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold were also offered new deals but it is unclear whether any of the trio are close to signing.

Alisson admission

Ultimately, there is no doubting how Salah's teammates feel about him remaining at the club. Speaking recently, Alisson Becker admitted: "We all want him to renew his contract, to remain at the club.

"I want the best for the club and the best for him. He's very calm.

"He doesn't seem to let this type of situation affect him. He's mentally very focused on his aims."
