Newcastle United are on another great run in the Carabao Cup.
It’s yet another semi-final as Newcastle look to win their first trophy since 1969 after heartbreak at Wembley in 2023.
Newcastle beat Brentford on Wednesday in front of a packed-out St James’ Park with Eddie Howe’s side avenging the defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium a week prior. It felt like a complete performance with signs of Newcastle that qualified for the Champions League on show.
There is a good feeling in the air that Howe could take his team all the way this time. With a more favourable semi-final draw, the big challenge now is getting a good result against Arsenal at the Emirates before League Cup football returns to Tyneside for the all-important second leg.
Thanks to their fantastic performances on Wednesday, three Newcastle stars have been named in the Carabao Cup’s Team of the Round.

Fabian Schar, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon named in the Carabao Cup Team of the Round
The performances of the trio didn’t go unnoticed by WhoScored.
Sandro Tonali looks like he has fully settled back into football following his 10-month ban. The Italian bagged a magnificent brace in the win over Brentford which earned him a spot in the team of the round. It could’ve been a hat-trick for Tonali had it not been for a blocked effort in the box which Anthony Gordon loved.
Swiss defender Fabian Schar also found himself on the scoresheet thanks to his goal assisted by an unselfish Bruno Guimaraes and could’ve had himself a clean sheet if it weren’t for a late Yoane Wissa goal.

Although Gordon didn’t get himself on the scoresheet he still had a fantastic game under the lights. The 23-year-old assisted Tonali’s second goal and avoided a booking which would’ve forced him out of the semi-final first leg.
The Magpies will be without Schar and Guimaraes for the next leg after they received their second bookings but will have Sean Longstaff back after missing the Brentford game.
Newcastle United’s outstanding defensive record in the Carabao Cup
Howe should be pleased with the way his side have defended in the Carabao Cup.
In the four games they’ve played this season, Newcastle have only conceded two goals, the lowest in the competition with an extra game played.
Their two clean sheets after four games played are joint highest alongside Preston North End and Stoke City.
Newcastle must have these statistics in their mind as they enter an incredibly tough first leg against Arsenal. They must also look back to Newcastle’s win against Arsenal earlier in the season for inspiration and belief that they can get a result.
A potential cup final at Wembley against Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur awaits them.
