He 'couldn’t get into the team' at Leicester City, now he's one of Europe's most prolific…

Leicester City are in the midst of a tough 2024/25 season and probably wish they had a former player back at the club.

The Foxes dominated the Championship last term but the current campaign has been anything but easy for them.

Leicester City go into the latest round of Premier League fixtures knowing a defeat to Wolverhampton Wanders could see them slip into the relegation zone.

Steve Cooper was ousted from the King Power dugout last month, with Ruud van Nistelrooy having since replaced him.

The Dutchman has endured a mixed start to life in the Midlands, most recently being hammered 4-0 by Newcastle United.

Van Nistelrooy needs to fix a number of problems at Leicester this season, one of which is the lack of goals they are scoring outside of a 37-year-old Jamie Vardy.

Odsonne Edouard has been poor for the Foxes and could see his loan deal cut short in January, while Patson Daka has just one league goal to his name in 2024/25.

Had things gone differently, however, there is a chance Leicester could have had one of the best goalscorers in Europe still on their books.

Harry Kane couldn’t get a game for Leicester City

Back in the 2012/13 season, Leicester were plying their trade in the Championship under Nigel Pearson.

The Foxes were eyeing promotion to the Premier League and opted to utalise the transfer market to reinforce their squad in February.

This saw Harry Kane signed on loan for the second half of the season from Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Kane really struggled to hold down a regular starting berth following his move, only playing 586 minutes across 15 outings, in which he scored just twice.

Speaking to ITV in 2020, the number nine opened up on his lack of playing time during his spell at Leicester.

He said: “I ended up going to Leicester for six months and I couldn’t get into the team. I was on the bench a lot. That was probably the time in my career that was the hardest.

“I was 19 and I was thinking: ‘If I can’t play for Leicester, in the Championship at the time, how am I going to get back and play for Tottenham?’”

How many career goals has Harry Kane scored

His ill-fated spell with Leicester was the last time Kane was loaned out by Tottenham, who began offering him semi-regular playing time in 2013/14.

The now 31-year-old really came into his own the following season, notching a staggering 21 top-flight goals in 34 matches.

Kane didn’t look back from that point and is now the second all-time top scorer in the history of the Premier League.

The Englishman also surpassed Wayne Rooney’s record for most goals scored at international level, and his goalscoring exploits have continued following his move to Bayern Munich in August 2023.
