Renascor Resources submits draft response document to EIS public consultation for spherical graphite manufacturing facility
Approval by South Australian planning minister will pave way for company to construct the facility
Facility part of plan to become the first integrated mine and battery anode material operation outside of China
Special Report: Renascor’s ambition of developing the first integrated mine and battery anode material operation outside of China is closer to fruition with its planned purified spherical graphite manufacturing facility now in the final stages of assessment.
The company’s submission of its draft response document with the South Australian Department for Housing and Urban Development initiates the final stages of the impact assessed development process for the PSG facility, the downstream portion of its planned vertically-integrated battery anode material project.
Development approval from South Australia’s planning minister will allow Renascor Resources (ASX:RNU) to construct and operate a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility to produce up to 100,000tpa of PSG for use in lithium-ion battery anodes.
This will use graphite concentrate from the company’s wholly-owned Siviour deposit near Arno Bay, South Australia as feedstock.
Managing director David Christensen said the lodgement of the document for the planned PSG facility is a significant milestone in the development of its BAM project and is underpinned by extensive stakeholder engagement and technical studies, independent technical reviews and comprehensive discussions.
“We look forward to continued engagement with DHUD, the local community and the state government as we seek regulatory approval for our PSG facility and advance our plans to construct and operate a state-of-the art manufacturing facility to supply globally competitive purified spherical graphite for the lithium-ion battery sector,” he added.
Process underway
The submission of the draft response document followed the previously completed environmental impact statement for the PSG facility.
It is supported by extensive consultation with community stakeholders and local and state government agencies and is provided in response to public consultation on the EIS for the Bolivar site.
The South Australian State Planning Commission, the state’s independent, principal planning body, will now prepare an assessment report and recommendation for the PSG facility for consideration by the planning minister.
Highlighting the potential of the project, the company had in July 2024 won a $5m grant from the Australian Government’s International Partnerships in Critical Minerals Program to design, construct, and operate the facility.
Concentrate production from Siviour is expected to start imminently while commissioning of the PSG facility could begin as early as Q2 2025.
Siviour deposit
Siviour is the world’s second largest proven reserve of graphite and the largest outside of Africa.
Mining will be conducted through a conventional open pit while processing will be achieved through a crush, grind, float processing circuit, delivering low operating costs due to the project’s favourable geology and geometry.
