Farhad Moshiri reportedly opted against a deal that could have seen Everton sign Erling Haaland for “two or three million” before his rise to fame, Aaron Lennon has said.

The recent completion of The Friedkin Group’s takeover has lifted spirits on Merseyside ahead of what is anticipated to be a huge rebuild for Everton.

Moshiri failed to deliver the success that he promised the club and Lennon, speaking via the Football Daily podcast (20 December) has thrown fuel into the fire by claiming the now ex-Toffees owner refused to sign off on a deal that would have seen Haaland sign for Everton.

As quoted by the Mirror, Lennon admitted: “I remember Erling Haaland walking in the building with Steve Walsh coming up to me in the physio room and introduced him to me like, ‘Oh look Aaron, we’ve got Haaland. You know his Dad, Alfie? The Leeds boy. Hopefully, we’re going to have him here’. And I was like, ‘Oh wow, I have not heard much of him’.

“I think he was 15 or 16 years old and, never seen him again. I think they could have had him for two or three million and I think Moshiri didn’t sign off on that. Could you imagine? Erling Haaland would have signed for Everton.”

Haaland failure sums up Moshiri’s Everton reign

While no one could have predicted the heights that Haaland has reached since his departure from RB Salzburg, Lennon’s comments definitely beg the question of what could have happened if Moshiri signed off on the deal.

Unfortunately, that was the case for a lot of scenarios under his stewardship with ‘what if’ a constant reminder of the way things could have been for the Toffees.

TFG will have a task at hand to ensure those mistakes aren’t repeated although it’s unlikely to happen in January with limited funds to be available.

Moshiri had high ambitions for the club but he simply wasn’t able to deliver with Everton now seemingly involved in their fourth successive relegation battle and the new ownership will need to make several changes to stop the decaying of the club.

All hopes are that Everton can return to be a competitive Premier League side in the coming years although it’s probably fair to say any deal to sign Haaland now is off the cards.
