He left Wrexham for £100,000, now he has an FA Cup medal and is playing in the Premier League

Wrexham have seen some top-quality players come and go from the Racecourse Ground over the years.

The Red Dragons are in the early stages of a new era following Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds purchasing the club in 2021.

Prior to that, they had spent 15 years in the National League after floating around League Two and the third tier for some time.

Despite having never played in the Premier League and last lining out in the second division back in 2002, Wrexham fans have seen some superb stars play for their team in the 21st century.

Joe Allen, formerly of Liverpool, spent part of 2008 on loan from fellow Welsh side Swansea City.

More recently, Wrexham were able to sign Ben Foster after the goalkeeper had just spent the previous campaign plying his trade in the Premier League.

Another former top-flight ace could be on his way to Wales next month as well, with Patrick Bamford linked with a transfer.

Before Foster, though, Wrexham had another top-class goalkeeper on their books.

Premier League goalkeeper Danny Ward began his career with Wrexham

A Wrexham native, Danny Ward began his career with the Welsh side, being promoted to their senior side in 2010.

Now 31, the goalkeeper had obvious talent and after a successful loan spell with Tamworth, was sold to Premier League giants Liverpool in January 2012 for £100,000 – as per BBC Sport.

Ward spent six years on the Reds’ books, during which time he earned a UEFA Europa League runners-up medal.

Liverpool then sold the former Wrexham man to Leicester City in 2018 and he has since made 51 appearances for the Foxes – winning the FA Cup, Community Shield and Championship during his time at the King Power.

Ward most recently played in the Premier League on December 14th, coming off the bench in a defeat to Newcastle United following an injury to Mads Hermansen.

Wrexham suffer goalkeeper injury crisis

While Ward isn’t currently a regular starter for Leicester, Wrexham fans would no doubt love him back at their ground right now.

Arthur Okonkwo is their number-one shot-stopper this season but has been out since last month with a wrist injury.

Wrexham were given a positive Okonkwo update this week but he is still not ready to make his return.

The Red Dragons have also seen Callum Burton suffer a long-term injury after he stepped up to replace the former Arsenal gem.

This forced Wrexham to dip into the free agent market and sign Brad Foster to provide cover for third-choice option, Mark Howard.

Parkinson’s men face Bristol Rovers on Saturday and Howard is expected to be between the sticks.
