Sometimes I nearly choke on my morning coffee as I read the ‘reports’ and rumours at this time of year: The January transfer window is just around the corner and daily there are half a dozen new attackers and strikers being linked with The Hammers. This one, though, just made me think ‘if that happens, I’ll eat my bobble hat’.
Gonzo covered the initial report last night before I had a chance to digest it. being much more mature than me he wrote a measured piece.
Put it into context: West Ham spent about £140 million last summer, most expensive purchase being Max Kilman at £40 million – a total of ten signings, nine of whom are in the main squad.

Serious cash. And there’s not much left right now.
The club is officially quoted as being ‘close to PSR guidelines’ and ‘needs to sell to buy’. And if you are a follower of West Ham or a journalist with even a passing interest in the club, you know West Ham have two priorities, after Michail’s dreadful car accident. A new striker (or two!) and fast young creative midfield players. First and foremost.
There certainly isn’t £40 million sitting waiting earmarked for a new centre back just now. The Hammers will make do and mend in the back as they already have Jean Clair Todibo sitting idle.
So when the report in question which we both read claims ‘Spurs and West Ham are crazy about – Inter defender Yann Bisseck’- you’ll excuse me for snorting coffee over my keyboard. I saw this in sempreinter but they were quoting a ‘caughtoffside’ report. Apparently they report that:”West Ham would be ready to go above 35 million British pounds with an offer for the German.” £40 million just now? With no striker and a midfield needing overhauling?
Frankly, I’d go so far as to say there is more chance of Jhon Duran walking through the door in January. Mind you, it explains why January is called the ‘silly season’.
If by any faint chance, Yann Bisseck who I’m sure is a very good defender- does arrive from Italy, I’ll go to my next Hammers game dressed as a Christmas pudding as penance. And you can quote me on that.
