Liverpool are being linked with a new defender and forward ahead of the January transfer window. Rumours have been swirling over the last few weeks and months in the build-up to the New Year, suggesting that it could be a busy time for the recruitment team at Anfield.

Arne Slot has been working with his newly inherited squad for the last few months after becoming Liverpool's new head coach in the summer. The Dutchman has guided the Reds to the top of the Premier League and Champions League tables as he aims to win a major trophy in his first season in charge.

With the January window on the horizon, Liverpool have been credited with several possible targets who could be added to Slot's squad. Federico Chiesa was the only new addition in the summer, with Giorgi Mamardashvili also being signed but will not officially move to Anfield until next summer after spending the season on loan at Valencia.

Here, the ECHO assesses some of the latest Liverpool transfer rumours and speculation that have emerged over the last 24 hours.

Liverpool are being linked with a move for Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies. According to Sport Bild reporter Christian Falk, the Reds have entered the race to sign the Canada international in the January transfer window.

Davies' contract at Bayern is set to expire at the end of the season, and there have been plenty of rumours linking the left-back with a free transfer to either Real Madrid or Manchester United in the summer. Falk has reported to Caught Offside that Liverpool have a "chance" at being able to sign Davies in the New Year.

It has been reported that Madrid and Man United are the most likely destinations for Davies if he was to leave Bayern in January. The Bundesliga club reportedly still have hopes of agreeing a new contract with Davies, but it has been stated that a move to Liverpool is still a possibility.

Elsewhere, Liverpool are once again being credited with an interest in signing Lyon star Rayan Cherki. According to French news outlet Foot Mercato, the Reds remain interested in signing Cherki and are pushing to bring the player to Anfield.

However, the report adds that Liverpool are facing competition from Paris Saint-Germain for Cherki's signature. It has been claimed that the Reds could try and sign Cherki in the January transfer window, with a price tag believed to be around €30million (£25million).
