Newcastle United pair Fabian Schar and Sandro Tonali are walking a suspension tightrope for the next three matches.

Both players have each picked up four Premier League bookings so far this season, meaning they are just one more away from serving a one-match suspension. As per league rules, any player cautioned five times in their team’s opening 19 league games must serve a one-match ban.

Schar has gone six games without getting a yellow card while Tonali was last booked in the recent 3-3 draw against Liverpool at St James’ Park. In order to avoid punishment, they must avoid a booking in upcoming fixtures against Ipswich Town, Aston Villa and Manchester United.

If either player were booked at Portman Road on Saturday then they would miss the Boxing Day clash against Aston Villa.

“I'm disappointed to lose him [Joelinton] because he's the type of player we need in every away game,” said Howe. “He's such a wholehearted player so at least he can play free and play his normal game.”

When Newcastle visit Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, January 4, the disciplinary threshold increases to 10 yellow cards in 32 games.
