Reece James has reached out and delivered a message of support to former team-mate Mason Mount.

The Chelsea captain and Manchester United star broke through together at Stamford Bridge and won the Champions League with the Blues. While James was eventually named the side's skipper, Mount departed for Old Trafford having been unable to come to terms over a new deal.

Since then, both have struggled with injury and seen numerous setbacks. United ace Mount has managed just 32 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils and was once again forced off the field after just 14 minutes in the 2-1 win over Manchester City.

James, 25, also currently out due to injury, provided an empathetic perspective to Mount. The defender acknowledged the difficulty of spending significant time off the pitch.

James posted: "Not many people understand what you’re going through but I have lived your disappointment after disappointment after disappointment.

"It’s real tough and lonely man! Speedy recovery and stay strong brother! I have no doubts you’ll be back to your best."

The comment followed an emotional post from Mount on Instagram. The midfielder reached out to United fans to express his disappointment.

"Words can’t portray how devastated I’m feeling right now, you could probably see the look on my face when it happened," he said. "I knew what it meant.

"United fans, you may not know me too well yet, but one thing I can guarantee, I will never give up or lose faith. I’ve said this before, but I will continue to give everything, get through this tough period and won’t stop until that’s achieved."

Amorim has already confirmed Mount is set to be out for several weeks. The Portuguese coach has promised his support to the 25-year-old.

"He's really sad," Amorim said. "In the dressing room he was really, really sad so we need to help him.

"When player is in this moment with a lot of injuries and with this schedule, it's really hard for them. We will try to find a better way to recover these kind of guys like Mount and Luke Shaw because after a few weeks and a few months they will be ready to cope with a lot of things."
