With the January transfer window opening in two weeks Manchester City appear desperate to sign a quality midfielder or two to strengthen their engine room. Jack Gaughan has previously reported for the Daily Mail that Martin Zubimendi and Bruno Guimaraes were looming as City’s primary transfer targets for next month’s transfer window. But two new reports indicate that those two aren’t Manchester City’s targets for next month’s window. If that is the case two names may already be off the board ahead of next month’s transfer window opening.
Sam Lee of the Athletic has reported via X that neither Bruno Guimaraes nor Martin Zubimendi are transfer targets for Manchester City. Lee doesn’t add who may be City’s midfield targets during next month’s transfer window. To add to Sam Lee’s report, Simon Bajkowski has also reported for Manchester Evening News that neither Guimaraes nor Zubimendi are on City’s hitlist for next month. That is two reliable sources reporting the same information. So it does appear that Manchester City may be focusing their attention elsewhere in next month’s transfer window.

But who could that possibly be? That’s the million-dollar question. A report earlier this week from Rudy Galetti for TeamTalk suggested that Atalanta midfielder Ederson could be one player. However, as Galetti reports, that would be no easy deal to complete. Ederson is a crucial player for Atalanta. Perhaps Ederson is looming as the man City will move for next month.
If Martin Zubimendi and Bruno Guimaraes are off the table as City transfer targets it remains to be seen who they will target next month. Whatever happens you, do get the sense that City will move for a midfielder or two. Who that could be isn’t known at this stage.
