There is a lot of noise around the future of Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

Guimaraes was named club captain at the start of the season and has worked hard to get Newcastle out of their slump from the start of the season.

The Brazilian captained the side again in Newcastle’s win against Brentford on Wednesday assisting a goal from Fabian Schar.

When Guimaraes signed a new contract there was a lot of speculation over his future due to the £100m release clause in his contract. That clause has since expired and he thrives in the squad each week.

Newcastle will be without Guimaraes for the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal but will have him at their disposal for Saturday’s game against Ipswich.

While rumours about his future persist there has been a major update regarding his January interest.

Manchester City aren’t interested in signing Bruno Guimaraes in January

Reports had linked Guimaraes with a move to defending Champions Manchester City in January and suggested Newcastle turned down a £70m approach from the Cityzens in the summer despite his release clause.

Now, according to The Athletic’s Sam Lee, Guimaraes is not a target for City in January who are opting to look for a replacement for Rodri and potentially Kevin De Bruyne elsewhere.

Guimaraes talked about Newcastle in a recent interview referring to the city as a second home away from Brazil. The idea of an emotional exit can be put to one side now as Newcastle fans breathe a sigh of relief.

This doesn’t rule out an approach in the summer, however, with City perhaps waiting to see how Newcastle perform in the domestic competitions to see whether they qualify for European football. This is something that could determine the futures of many players including Alexander Isak.

What does Guimaraes staying mean for Newcastle’s January transfer business?

While the news will be welcomed by Newcastle fans there is still the lingering issue with PSR that needs to be overcome.

Sporting director Paul Mitchell will be encouraged to sell in January but may opt for more longstanding players.

Miguel Almiron could join MLS side Charlotte FC which would generate £8m for the Magpies. Elsewhere Martin Dubravka could move to Saudi Arabia as he considers the next step in his career.

Newcastle want to sign a striker, winger and goalkeeper in January but those sales will need to be made to fund Johan Bakayoko who Newcastle want.
