Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was seriously impressed by an Aston Villa star during his side’s 2-1 defeat at Villa Park.

Morgan Rogers stole the show as Villa repeated last December’s heroics to secure all three points against the Premier League champions on Saturday afternoon.

Guardiola once had Rogers on the books, so he knows Villa’s prized talent all so well. The Spanish head coach admitted after the game that he’d love to have a player like Rogers available to him now but insisted the timing wasn’t right when the attacking midfielder was at the club.

When asked if he regrets letting Rogers leave, Guardiola said: “Did you know what happened with some players, it was a team that won the treble. Sometimes it’s the right tempo or the right time to give the chance. Of course, everyone knows how good is Morgan.

“In that age, at the moment, we have the players we have that allowed us to create the most successful eight years in football history. In our club, comparing in this 35 or 40 days it’s not good.

“Sometimes when they arrive they are three years younger, in that moment there are players in their prime, David Silvas, Bernardos and Riyads and Raheems. Sometimes it’s difficult and that’s the only reason why.”

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but it’s City’s worst nightmare right now as Rogers’ departure has ended up costing the Sky Blues millions. Rogers isn’t the only one to slip through their fingers as Cole Palmer has progressed into one of the Premier League’s best since his exit from the Etihad Stadium.

“That situation right now, of course these types of players would be with us but it’s always about the right moment,” Guardiola added. “I’m happy for him (Rogers) as he’s a lovely guy, he exploded last season and this season. He’s an exceptional player.”
