Chris Sutton has jumped to the defence of one Chelsea player by stating that he’s not been as bad this season as some people make out.
Overall, the Chelsea squad has been showered with praise for its performances this season. The Blues know that they’ll temporarily jump up to first in the Premier League table if they win on Sunday afternoon away to Everton.
However, there’s still the odd individual in the Blues camp that’s been criticised at times this year.

Chris Sutton defends Robert Sanchez
Chris Sutton has stood up for Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez, 27, by insisting that he’s not actually been too bad this season.
“The one area I see people questioning is the goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and could Chelsea get an upgrade on that, but I don’t think he’s been quite as bad as some are making out,” Sutton told South London Press.
Sanchez has regained his position as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper under Enzo Maresca, but many people continue to criticise and question him.
In 15 Premier League appearances this season, the shot-stopper only has three clean sheets. He’s made a few high-profile errors in the first half of the campaign, too.
Jamie O’Hara said Sanchez isn’t good enough to start for Chelsea as their main goalkeeper right now. Elsewhere, Mark Schwarzer has urged Chelsea to replace Sanchez in order to help them win trophies.

While Sanchez is capable of producing the spectacular in-between the sticks, he’s also prone to the odd howler that costs his team. It’s certainly not the hallmarks of an elite gloveman.
In the Spanish keeper’s last four Chelsea appearances, his inconsistency is there to see in black and white.

Sanchez cost Chelsea £25m (BBC) to sign in the summer of 2023. So far in his Chelsea career, he’s proven that his transfer fee is about right because he’s just a level below the very best goalkeepers in the sport right now.
