Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has praised Chelsea defender and former teammate Wesley Fofana as a top talent who can reach the top of his game. The veteran goalkeeper played alongside the France international at Leicester City before both men left the club at different points.

Fofana left Leicester City for Chelsea in 2022 for around £70 million but has struggled with injuries throughout his time at Stamford Bridge. The 24-year-old missed the entirety of the 2023-24 season with knee injuries, only returning to action at the start of the 2024-25 season.

Kasper Schmeichel witnessed first-hand as Fofana went from a prospect in France to a player who commanded a £70 million fee within the space of two years. He told Ben Foster in the latter's podcast that the centre-back has the potential to be what he wants to be in his career.

“Wes, what a guy, I love him. He came to us relatively unknown from St Ettiene, but he was like a big kid, very smiley, very chatty, and then he played and you were like ‘oh wow, ok this boy has something.

"He’s honestly a great kid, another one with a high workrate as well, no surprise he’s gone on to be what he is and he has the potential to be what he wants to be.”

Schmeichel and Fofana were teammates in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons at the King Power Stadium. They finished fifth and eighth in their two seasons together in the Premier League, winning the FA Cup and Community Shield. They also played in the UEFA Europa League in the 2021-22 season.

Wesley Fofana has appeared only 32 times for Chelsea since his arrival at Stamford Bridge in 2022, 12 of which have come this season. The Frenchman is set for another extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury against Aston Villa earlier this month.

Chelsea defender set to remain with club this season - Reports

Chelsea defender Axel Disasi is set to remain on the books of the Blues as they head into the first transfer window of the season, as per Nizaar Kinsella. The Frenchman had been linked with an exit from the club after failing to establish himself as a regular starter for Enzo Maresca's side.

Disasi, who joined Chelsea from AS Monaco in 2023, has featured 13 times across all competitions this season but has only two league starts for the Blues. He has found the net twice, once each in the Premier League and Europa Conference League.

Axel Disasi had been linked with a January exit from Stamford Bridge over his lack of game time, with Juventus and a host of Ligue 1 sides linked. Injuries to Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana have left the Blues light at the back, essentially ruling out the possibility of a transfer for Disasi.
