Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Raheem Sterling will miss the Gunners’ Premier League clash against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park due to an injury sustained during training on Friday.

The news comes as a blow to Arsenal, who are in South London for another derby after securing a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Palace in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Sterling, who is on loan from Chelsea, started in the midweek cup fixture and would have hoped to be part of the squad for Saturday’s game. However, Arteta revealed the forward’s absence shortly before kickoff.

“Raheem, unfortunately, we lost him yesterday. He felt something in training, and he had to come off,” Arteta explained. “We need to explore that with more tests.”

The England international joined Arsenal on transfer deadline day but has struggled to make a significant impact under Arteta. His absence creates a selection challenge for the Gunners, who are looking to maintain momentum in the league.

In more positive news, Declan Rice returned to the bench after recovering from an injury sustained during Arsenal’s victory over Everton last weekend. The midfielder missed the Carabao Cup win but is now available for selection.

“Dec only had one training session; that’s why he’s on the bench. But it’s good we have him available,” Arteta said.

Gabriel Jesus, fresh from his stunning hat-trick in the midweek cup match, retains his place in the starting lineup. Arteta explained his decision to start Jesus over Kai Havertz, who shifts back into midfield.

“It was quite an easy decision, the way [Jesus] performed, the way he scored his goals, and the way he brought something to the team. He deserves to play again,” Arteta noted.

Arsenal will be hoping to build on their midweek success and secure a crucial three points in their pursuit of the Premier League title.
