Pervis Estupinan should have been red carded for Brighton in their 1-1 draw against West Ham United, according to Keith Hackett.
The Brighton full-back lunged in on Max Kilman during the second half of Saturday’s (21 December) contest.
VAR checked the foul and did not instruct referee Rob Jones to check the pitchside monitor, much to the surprise of former FIFA official Hackett.
Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, Hackett said: “The player is off his feet – he’s out of control and endangers the safety of his opponent.
“That is a red card offence and there is no reason why VAR did not intervene and request the referee to review the pitchside monitor

“The serious foul play law states that a tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play.
“Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.”
Brighton get lucky against West Ham United
Even the Brighton fans in attendance at the London Stadium will surely accept Estupinan should have been sent off.
As Hackett says, the defender was out of control and it is just fortunate that Kilman was not seriously injured.

Not only did the referee not deem it worthy of a red, VAR also – for some reason or other – did not feel the need to ask him to review the incident.
It was a shocker of a decision in a game in which West Ham had to overcome a “poor” moment from one player to battle back for what was a decent point all things considered.
