Key man expected to join Everton after Manchester United exit

Former Manchester United chief Dan Ashworth is on the verge of taking up an important role at Everton.

According to a report from Football Insider, Dan Ashworth could soon make a return to football with Everton under their new ownership. The English transfer expert parted ways with Manchester United earlier in the month and he seems ready to take up a new role.

Ashworth has made quite a name for himself thanks to impressive work at West Bromwich Albion, Brighton and Newcastle United. His impressive track record resulted in a significant amount of interest in him from across Europe.

Ashworth’s short stint at Manchester United

While he was a key figure at the Tyneside club, Manchester United managed to prise him away. The Red Devils held talks with him and convinced him about a move to Old Trafford. The 53-year-old expressed his desire to leave for United at the start of 2024 following which he was put on a gardening leave by Newcastle.

After long-drawn negotiations, both parties agreed upon a £5 million compensation. He eventually took charge at the Manchester-based club at the start of July. While he was expected to play a pivot role in all the transfer talks, Ashworth could only survive months at United hot seat.

He ended up parting ways with United at the start of the month and they were forced to pay another £5 million to get him off their books. The former Newcastle sporting director is free and available but that is unlikely to be the case for long.

Ashworth could join Everton

Everton have emerged as a potential destination for the transfer expert. The Merseyside club already have Kevin Thelwell at the club but with his contract running out at the end of the season, they are considering bringing Ashworth to the club.

The Toffees won’t have to pay any compensation to appoint him. The Friedkin Group who are expected to soon complete the takeover of the Merseyside club are interested in having Ashworth behind the scenes as they look to build a strong project for the long run.
