Newcastle United playing with fire as 'noises' come out about Alexander Isak

Newcastle United can’t sign the players they want in January.

It all comes down to PSR, the club are crippled by it even after Newcastle sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh in the summer.

The thought is that sporting director Paul Mitchell must sell players to fund transfers for Eddie Howe.

Newcastle avoided a points deduction for the season thanks to late sales and don’t want to be caught in a position where they need to offload players they don’t want to.

The Magpies want Johan Bakayoko and Bryan Mbeumo in January but it would set the club back £50m for each of them. Howe has told Mitchell the positions he wants and it’s down to him to make his request happen.

Now, recent words suggest that a player who is thriving at Newcastle could be sold much to the despair of Newcastle fans.

Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak could have eyeballs on him in 2025

Alexander Isak is finding his form again after a shaky start to the season. The Swede has scored eight goals in 17 games across the Premier League and Carabao Cup including one in Newcastle’s win against Leicester at St James’ Park.

His form means he has attracted interest from clubs in the Premier League including Arsenal who wanted Isak in the summer.

However, reporter David Ornstein spoke in a video on The Athletic’s YouTube channel where he was asked for his ‘one to watch’ for summer 2025.

“We should cast our gaze onto Alexander Isak,” he said.

“We’ve seen how unbelievably good he is when he’s fit and in the rhythm. The way he can score against big teams which is always a factor that the big teams consider when they’re looking at potential recruits.

“There doesn’t seem to be progress on a new contract. Newcastle has him for several more years but it seems the noises are that he would’ve wanted a new deal and that hasn’t come about just yet so that perhaps opens the opportunity for clubs to make a push.

“Then come factors such as Newcastle’s PSR position finances we’ve seen, read, heard, talked about how difficult and tight it is there and the potential need to sell somebody significant now.

“We’ve talked in the past about Bruno Guimaraes, I’m not sure what market is there for him and he’s pushing on 27.

“Anthony Gordon, he’s been linked with Liverpool in the past. He seemed to have committed his future to the club in terms of a contract but also in his words in interviews.

“So it comes back to Isak and he’s somebody that clubs have looked very closely at in the past. Arsenal for example looked to sign him when he was at Real Sociedad.

“I do think Arsenal would seriously consider going for him but finances are an issue because he’s going to cost a hell of a lot of money, he has spent a lot of time out injured and Arsenal will have other players on their radar as well and they won’t be the only club looking at Alexander Isak.”

How much would it cost Arsenal to sign Isak from Newcastle United?

Although Howe wouldn’t want to, the sale of Isak would be huge for PSR. It’s no secret that Newcastle have struggled to sign players because of it. The woes look like they will continue into the January transfer window a sale needed to fund any transfer activity.

In May, Newcastle made their stance on him leaving clear by slapping a whopping £180m price tag on Isak.

This season is vital for Howe who could love a slew of players should they fail to qualify for European competition.

Newcastle would qualify for the Europa League if they managed to win the Carabao Cup but they face an incredibly tough challenge after being drawn against Arsenal in the semi-final and needing to play one of Tottenham or Liverpool in the final should they make it there.
