Keith Hackett hailed the use of Goal-line Technology as Aston Villa beat Manchester City 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday.

Inside 90 seconds of the Premier League clash, Pau Torres thought he’d scored from a Lucas Digne corner when his header was diverted onto the crossbar by City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.

Torres, 27, was adamant that he’d scored but GLT replays showed that the ball was one or two centimetres away from crossing the goal line completely.

Former Premier League and FIFA referee Hackett was involved in the introduction of GLT and he was happy to see it work properly without any questions in Villa’s win over City.

“Having requested the Premier League to support the development and introduction of Goal-line Technology, it demonstrates that our work with Hawkeye, including writing a clear criteria of operation and the need for speed of delivery, can produce a product that delivers accurate decision-making,” Hackett told Villa News.

“Early in this game, GLT ruled that the ball had not crossed the line and that was fully accepted by the players and fans.

Goal-line technology works this time at Aston Villa

“Those seven cameras tracking the ball around each goalmouth, operating at 500 frames per second and a software programme that are all calibrated before each game, delivers an accurate decision.

“*This should be the requirement of the delayed introduction of the semi-automated offside system, which is still to make its debut in the Premier League.*“

GLT’s introduction into football has largely been accepted as a massive success.

However, Aston Villa were involved in the biggest controversy involving the technology when Sheffield United were denied a goal in a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa in 2020.

Hawk-Eye admitted a mistake after Orjan Nyland carried the ball over his own line.

If it did work and Sheffield United were awarded a goal, Villa would have lost a point and been relegated on goal difference, to the expense of Bournemouth.
