Diogo Jota has dropped a major hint about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation. The Liverpool full-back’s future remains up in the air with his current deal due to expire at the end of the season and Real Madrid interested in the Anfield hero.

There are fears among some fans that Alexander-Arnold, 26, may be in his final season as a Reds player. However, a telling comment from Jota has suggested a new deal could, in fact, be closer than many think.

Appearing on Sky Sports, the Portuguese forward was asked what he would buy his team-mate for Christmas. He replied, smiling: “Paper and a pen, so he can sign his new contract.” He laughed at the end along with the Sky Sports reporter, but it certainly suggests there remains a chance the England star could commit his future to the Reds.

The comment left fans wondering why Jota would say such a thing if a new deal for Alexander-Arnold wasn’t in the pipeline. One said: “Is it delusional to think Diogo Jota wouldn’t joke about Trent’s contract unless he was more likely to sign a new one?”

Another asked: “Can we genuinely expect [a] Trent contract in form of a Christmas present on Christmas Day?” A third pondered: “Does Jota know something we don’t?”

An optimistic fourth said: "Diogo is all of us. Come on bro, you know what to do." And another added: "For this only, Jota deserves new contract."

Alexander-Arnold was recently quizzed on his future on the Men in Blazers podcast. Asked what else he would like to accomplish, he said: “Of course winning more trophies, but on a personal level, building a legacy, that is something that is important.

“Being spoken about in the highest regard, especially after you have finished. In 10, 15 years, if I am spoken about as one of the best right-backs, or the best right-back, that is what I am playing for now and using it as motivation.”

Speculation continues about his future, with Real Madrid continually being linked, and in less than a fortnight he will be able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs.

But with Liverpool top of the Premier League and the Champions League tables, and having captained the team in their Carabao Cup quarter-final win at Southampton on Wednesday in the absence of the rested Virgil van Dijk, there is still plenty to play for at Anfield.

Alexander-Arnold said: “I’ve been a fan, I know the emotions in the game. I’ve got people around me who are all fans so, of course, I probably see it and am more open to it than other players as I’ve got a lot more connections who love the club. But whether I feel it more or less I don’t know.”

While hope has been raised around the full-back's future, Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk's situations remain up in the air too. Neither of the older pair have agreed terms yet on new deals, but have continued to show their undeniable importance to the team and club this season.
