Report: Why Michael Olise was against joining Chelsea before the club signed Cole Palmer

Chelsea tried to sign Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise this year and in 2023.

Chelsea failed on both occasions and while Michael Olise is a very talented footballer, the Blues will be glad that they did the first time.

After missing out on the former Crystal Palace star in the 2023 summer transfer window, the club went on to sign Cole Palmer, who has proven to be one of the best pieces of business they have ever done. Palmer was recently praised by Jaap Stam, who thinks he is the most influential player in the Premier League at this moment in time.

However, had Chelsea offered Olise higher wages, then they could have ended up with the 23-year-old instead of Palmer.

Michael Olise was not happy with Chelsea’s wage structure

In the summer of 2023, there was a lot of confusion surrounding the release clause in Olise’s contract.

That was not the only thing that stopped the Blues from signing the France international, though.

According to The Telegraph, Olise was not prepared to accept the kind of contract Chelsea were offering.

The same outlet claims that the winger was Chelsea’s first choice, but failure to capture him saw them eventually turn to Palmer.

In the end, it has worked out pretty well for Palmer, who has quickly gone on to become one of the best players in the Premier League. Enzo Fernandez recently spoke about Palmer, stating that he has “incredible quality”.

Who is the better player, Cole Palmer or Michael Olise?

Again, Olise is an extremely gifted player. He is so effective out wide, capable of beating full-backs with his dribbling.

However, Palmer is simply an output machine, and that is what attackers are graded on these days.

Olise’s output has been pretty good this season, with the Bayern man scoring five goals and providing five assists in 15 league appearances. But it does not quite stack up to Palmer’s numbers.

Player Games Goals Assists

Cole Palmer 16 11 6

Michael Olise 15 5 5

Simply put, Palmer is the more productive and effective player out of the two, though he has played more minutes than Olise. Still, his numbers from last season really puts him in another category compared to most other attackers.
