Man United place two targets on 'goalkeeper transfer shortlist' amid Andre Onana plan

Andre Onana in action for Manchester United

Manchester United are planning to sign a new goalkeeper to give Andre Onana more competition for his spot

Manchester United are considering the addition of a new goalkeeper to give Andre Onana some more competition, a new report has claimed. The 28-year-old has endured a mixed first 18 months at Old Trafford with those inconsistent performances continuing under Ruben Amorim.

While he has kept United in a number of games with some crucial saves, Onana has also been guilty of conceding some soft goals with Morgan Gibbs-White's strike in the 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest an example of that and disappointing displays by United goalkeepers continued earlier this week in the Carabao Cup.

Altay Bayindir was brought into the starting XI for the quarter-final tie against Tottenham but was arguably at fault for two of the four goals scored by Spurs. After pushing a long-range effort directly into the stride of Dominic Solanke who finished well, Bayindir allowed Son Heung-min to score directly from a corner late on.

Lucas Bergvall appeared to stop him punching the set-piece away by holding his hand down, but Bayindir could still have been stronger commanding his box. Following on from those incidents, a mini-overhaul between the sticks could be on the cards.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, via Patreon, United are beginning to pull together a shortlist of keepers that could be signed to push Onana for the No.1 spot.

It has been claimed that Tony Coton, who is the club's goalkeeper scout, remains keen on Ilian Meslier of Leeds United. Botafogo shot-stopper John Victor is also said to be under consideration. As for Bayindir's future, interest from elsewhere in the January transfer window may see United look to bring in a new face next month.

In terms of other big transfer news, Marcus Rashford appears primed for an exit after declaring he is keen for a new challenge. Amorim has since claimed he would be happy to keep the England international at the club but has left him out of the last two matchday squads.
