A puzzling Newcastle United myth continues to be echoed from those outside of the region.

Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney has claimed geography will prevent Newcastle United from attracting star players.

A myth espoused by many, Toon supporters have heard this narrative before. Ex-Aston Villa striker famously suggested Brentford - then a top-flight newbie - would be a more appealing destination than Tyneside.

“If you offer someone £40k-a-week for Newcastle or £30,000 to play for Brentford, they would pick Brentford,” he said following the Saudi-backed takeover. “Because let’s be honest, players don’t want to live in Newcastle.”

The history books, however, disprove that misconception. Forget the 90s, when Sir John Hall bankrolled foreign talent like David Ginola and Faustino Asprilla, recent activity reveals all.

Stars like Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman, Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali joined the Newcastle project regardless of the 291-mile trek to the capital. In truth, the Magpies were Kieran Trippier’s prime option when returning to England because of their status as the Premier League’s most northern frontier.

“It's like four or five hours. It's difficult to get people there, to get investment there, but they're going to have to do it. They must have known it before they bought it because these guys are not stupid people."
