Nine games in and Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd defence is still full of holes

Ruben Amorim’s reign as Manchester United manager lurched further into crisis in an emphatic 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth which was greeted by boos by a half-empty Old Trafford on the final whistle.

A first half header from Dean Huijsen was the start of United’s problems as, for the third game in eight days, they named a squad without Marcus Rashford in it.

Two goals in two minutes just after the hour came courtesy of Justin Kluivert’s penalty, awarded after he was fouled by Noussair Mazraoui, and a shot from Antoine Semenyo.

As with the opener, those goals again highlighted some appalling defending from Amorim’s charges who, nine games into his reign, show no signs of picking up his new system.

The result was a repeat of the corresponding fixture at the start of December last year and highlights the fact that the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, the man in charge 12 months ago, has hardly led to short-term improvements.

Bournemouth piled pressure on United and were well rewarded

Alejandro Garnacho, like Rashford dropped from last weekend’s derby win for “selection” reasons, came off the bench and, along with fellow substitute Rasmus Hojlund missed good chances to pull a goal back.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Chelsea were held to a goalless draw at Everton, Wolves beat Leicester City 3-0 and Fulham drew 0-0 with Southampton.
