Maresca‘happy’despite Chelsea missing chance to go top

Enzo Maresca has said he was ‘very happy’ with the performance from his Chelsea side despite a goalless draw at Everton.

Chelsea missed the chance to move top of the Premier League table after being frustrated at Goodison Park.

In an uneventful game, Nicolas Jackson saw an effort well saved by Jordan Pickford, while Idrissa Gueye helped stifle the threat of Cole Palmer.

The West Londoners had 75% of the possession on Merseyside but were unable to find a route past an Everton side who have now recorded five clean sheets in their last six games.

Despite the dropped points, Maresca believes his team performed better than in their 2-1 win over Brentford last weekend. He called Everton ‘one of the best teams in Europe in terms of clean sheets’.

“That was a real game. I am very happy because the performance of the boys was fantastic,” Maresca said speaking to BBC Match of the Day.

“Sometimes you have to play a different game and we are learning to play a different game. They are one of the best teams in Europe in terms of clean sheets.

“I said to the players I was more happy than [last week’s] game at Brentford [Chelsea won 2-1]. We tried everything. For sure, you can always do something better but we are very happy because this is a tough stadium – not only for us but also in the Premier League.”

Chelsea move within one point of Premier League leaders Liverpool after the draw. The latter, who have two games in hand, are in action against Tottenham Hotspur later in the day.
