Sean Dyche being known as a “long-ball merchant” means that The Friedkin Group won’t see him as a long-term fit at Everton, Aidy Boothroyd has said.
Speaking on Sky Sports News (22 December, 1:19pm) before the Toffees’ Premier League match with Chelsea, Boothroyd said the game would act as a “trial” for Dyche as a new era begins at Goodison Park.
The Friedkin Group completed their highly-anticipated takeover on 19 December, but Dyche’s future has long been under speculation and the Blues’ new owners have a history of quick-fire managerial changes.
Boothroyd said: “He’s on trial. He’s going to have to prove that he’s the guy for the job.
“If he doesn’t get Everton performing or playing well, then I’m not sure he will be at the club next year.

“It’s been difficult for Sean Dyche because everyone says he’s a long-ball merchant and when you get labelled as that, how many teams really want that?
“A lot of Everton fans don’t want to see that. Yes, they’ve got some good players but they don’t have enough to say they’re an above-mid-table side.
“But now they have the financial backing, I can’t see Dyche being there beyond this year.”
Sean Dyche could be on borrowed time at Everton
Friedkin’s takeover at Goodison finally being confirmed does shape up to be the dawn of a new era on Merseyside, with Evertonians the world over hopeful of seeing an uptick in fortunes going forward.
Out with the old and in with the new could well be the attitude Friedkin takes with the Toffees, especially with their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock on the way, but that could also mean the dugout too.

Dyche’s popularity with Blues fans has certainly gone ups and downs across his three years in charge, and supporters have made their feelings clear when big defeats have been inflicted this season.
Friedkin’s other club in Europe’s top five leagues – Roma – have already had three managers so far this season, which could be an ominous sign for Dyche if results begin to turn for the worse on Merseyside.
Dyche being out of contract in the summer gives Friedkin an easy opportunity to change managers at the end of the season, but the American’s track record suggests a switch could come much earlier.
