Chelsea sent surprise Victor Osimhen transfer instruction as Enzo Maresca told to complete deal

Chelsea have enjoyed a sensational start to the Premier League season and while Enzo Maresca might not want to admit it - they have proven they can challenge for the title.

In 17 Premier League games, Chelsea have scored 37 goals - holding the best attacking record in the league. Currently second on 35 points, some pundits have marked Maresca's side as genuine title contenders, while others believe not signing a new goalkeeper to replace Robert Sanchez could cost them.

Meanwhile, others have claimed that Chelsea must ensure they sign a new striker in the New Year, with the club linked with Nigeria international Victor Osimhen. The Blues have been heavily linked with a move for the frontman in the past few transfer windows, with his Napoli future regularly up in the air.

Falling out of favour under Napoli head coach Antonio Conte, Osimhen joined Galatasaray on loan. However, a hefty price tag on his shoulders has meant that no club came to sign him permanently.

He's enjoyed a fine spell in Turkey and has 12 goals and five assists to his name in 15 appearances in all competitions. However, former Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips believes the Blues should not look to sign a new striker in January but they must recruit a new defender instead.

"I think Victor Osimhen would be a top player in the Premier League, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that the striker position is where Chelsea should be prioritising in the next few transfer windows," Wright-Phillips told sportscasting.com.

"They let Thiago Silva go, but they didn’t replace him. I think they need more experience in the defence rather than in the striker position right now.

"They’re not struggling to score goals. That’s not a problem for them right now. The problem is they’re conceding goals. If they can cut some of those mistakes then again, we [will] see a different Chelsea."
