Enzo Maresca has been speaking after Chelsea’s goalless draw with Everton on Sunday.

Enzo Maresca has told his Chelsea players they must learn from their frustrating draw with Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday. The Blues suffered a setback in their title bid after failing to find a way through against the resolute Toffees.

Everton now have five clean sheets in six games, including clashes with Arsenal and Chelsea. The Blues did have a couple of chances in the first half, including two Nicolas Jackson efforts, but Everton also forced a goal-saving block from Tosin Adarabioyo, so as far as clear-cut chances were concerned, it was not a case of total domination from Chelsea.

That did not surprise Maresca, who knew his team would need to be clinical, something they were not able to live up to. “I was quite worried about this game,” Maresca said after the game. “It’s a tricky game, tricky stadium, tricky team. They are defensively top. You struggle to create chances against them.

“You have to deal with it and learn to play different games. Long balls, second balls, channels, set-pieces. Football is not only about how good we play on the ball. It’s also about how you defend and deal with that. I’m very proud today.

“Today’s game was a completely different game compared to the rest. You have to learn. It’s not easy but the way they showed togetherness has been brilliant today.”

Asked about the chances Chelsea did create, Maresca added: “In this kind of games, knowing you aren’t going to create many chances, you have to be clinical. In the first-half, we had the Nico one-vs-one with the ’keeper, the post from Nico, another two or three chances inside the box.

“If you are able to be clinical there and score the game probably becomes completely different but until then you’re going to struggle.”
