Chelsea are unlikely to face punishment from the Football Association for the chants that were heard during their clash with Everton at Goodison Park, former FIFA official Keith Hackett has said.

Away supporters could be heard chanting “feed the Scousers” to the tune of “Do they know it’s Christmas?” during Sunday’s goalless draw (22 December).

The chants were condemned by Liverpool Echo journalist Connor O’Neill as “vile” and “shameful” by Liverpool Echo journalist Connor O’Neill in a game that finished 0-0.

Ex-PGMOL chief Hackett agreed with O’Neill’s assessment of the chants and explained the process of what can happen during the game.

However, he does not foresee any punishment forthcoming for the Blues.

“I agree with the Echo journalist (O’Neill) that the songs are inflammatory and unacceptable,” Hackett exclusively told Goodison News.

“The responsibility of spectator behaviour is the home club. If they thought appropriate and able to distinguish what is been shouted or chanted then they can issue a warning over the loudspeaker.

“Frankly, I will be surprised if any action will be taken by the authorities.”

Chelsea chants not acceptable versus Everton

The chants were rightly condemned, especially at at time when so many across the country are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis and rising bills.

With the use of food banks also on the rise and many people stressed and concerned with the expense of Christmas, it was wholly inappropriate to be chanting what the Chelsea supporters did.

It was a dark mark on a full-blooded contest that saw both teams leave with a point after a goalless draw at Goodison Park.

Frankly, anyone involved in the chanting needs to do much, much better.
