Santiago Gimenez now shares why he rejected Nottingham Forest, transfer went to the wire

Nottingham Forest fought tooth and nail to sign Santiago Gimenez during the summer transfer window but to no avail.

With just hours of the window remaining Gimenez rejected Forest for the final tie, choosing to stay with Feyenoord instead.

Nuno Espirito Santo advised Evangelos Marinakis not to sign a striker in the end, choosing to go with his current options.

Chris Wood has rewarded that show of faith by scoring 10 goals so far this season, with Taiwo Awoniyi as the current backup.

Forest may well return for a striker in the January window but whether or not that is Gimenez remains to be seen.

Santiago Gimenez confirms why he rejected Nottingham Forest

The striker has been in fine form this season and scored during a 3-3 draw with Manchester City in the Champions League shortly after a return from injury.

He’s almost certainly going to be a wanted man in the future and it remains to be seen whether Forest can get a deal to sign him over the line in the future.

Gimenez didn’t reject Forest for any other reason than his desire to play in the Champions League it would seem and is open to an exit from Feyenoord in the future.

MORE FOREST STORIES

He told TNT Sports Mexico: “Yes obviously, I think everyone in Mexico knows that it was true that they came and wanted to pay for me what the club was asking but in the end, I decided to wait one more year here at Feyenoord because I had the possibility of playing in the Champions League, I had the option to grow up here and also another team came in but nothing materialised.

“It went all the way until the last day but nothing came of and I decided to wait, Nottingham (Forest) gave me one last day to say yes or no, we decided to say no.”

Forest might have missed the boat on Gimenez

If the Reds can somehow squeeze into Europe this season, signing someone like Gimenez should become a foregone conclusion.

However, until that point, the Reds might be fighting a losing battle to sign the Mexico international in the near future.

Gimenez has scored 10 goals in 14 games this season and it would appear as though he’s outgrown the Eredivisie.

Signing players in January is notoriously tricky and as a result, luring Gimenez to the City Ground could now be off the agenda.

These comments from the international player suggest that he’s happy to wait for a really big club and that could well discount Forest from the equation.
