Newcastle United's next opponents, Aston Villa, have been hit with a little injury scare ahead of their trip to St James' Park on Boxing Day.

Diego Carlos was absent from the matchday squad during the their 2-1 win over Manchester City on Saturday. Versatile Dutch youngster Lamare Bogarde, who was named on the bench, joined fellow centre-backs Pau Torres, Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings in the team.

The defender has played 16 times for his side this season, including in every Champions League group game so far. He had played in successive 90 minutes in the league before missing the fixture at the weekend.

Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery confirmed that the 31-year-old has suffered a slight injury. However, he also added that Carlos will be in contention to return for the Newcastle fixture, with more rest days.

“He has a small pain for a kick he received in a training session,” Emery said. “Yesterday we tried to train with him, but he couldn’t train. I think with more days resting, today and tomorrow, he will be available for the next match in Newcastle.”

Emery received some good news ahead of their win against Manchester City as Mings and Leon Bailey returned to the squad after their respective absences. Jacob Ramsey, on the other hand, will not be available for their journey to the North East as he recovers from a hamstring issue.

On Friday, Emery said: "Mings and Bailey are in the squad tomorrow. Not Jacob Ramsey because he is still progressing well, but he is not yet available. He is close to starting training with us."
