Tottenham Hotspur were pulled back to earth by Liverpool on Sunday as they suffered a 6-3 home defeat in the Premier League.
Spurs were starting to gain some momentum following back-to-back wins over Southampton (Premier League) and Manchester United (Carabao Cup), but came up against a Liverpool side that was too hot to handle. It was a painful loss at the hands of the league leaders, who further exposed the Ange Postecoglou-managed side’s defensive frailties.
The unavailability of Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies at the back meant Ange Postecoglou had to chop and change things in his starting XI. In addition, there weren’t many game-changing options for him to bring off the bench in contrast to Arne Slot, who introduced the likes of Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones in the second half.

Given Spurs’ incredibly inconsistent displays over the last two months, with injury issues one of the major mitigating factors behind it, the Australian head coach would be hoping to do some business in January to steady the ship.
Facing the media after the harrowing day at the office, Postecoglou was asked whether the club can bring in reinforcements next month, to which he replied (h/t Football London)
“Yeah, I guess if the right players are there. Again, it’s about making sure it’s something that’s going to help us continue to build on what we’re doing.”
Tottenham have been linked with several players in recent weeks and months. They have been targeting a new centre-back in 2025 after suffering from a lack of depth in the position, and Feyenoord star David Hancko has emerged as one of the potential options. Hancko, who is valued in the region of €50 million by the Eredivisie side, would be a terrific addition to bolster Spurs’ defensive spine.

Having had to solely rely on veteran Fraser Forster after a long-term injury to No.1 Guglielmo Vicario, Big Ange also wants to bring in a new goalkeeper next month. Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson and Burnley’s James Trafford have been identified as possible targets.

In addition, Tottenham have not ruled out adding a new wide attacker to Big Ange’s squad, owing to Richarlison and Wilson Odobert’s injury concerns. Young Mikey Moore has also been out for over a month due to a bad virus.
