ESPN pundit explains why Enzo Maresca should actually be pleased with his Chelsea team after Everton draw

Some Chelsea supporters will be disappointed with their side’s 0-0 draw with Everton over the weekend.

Chelsea had the chance to go top of the Premier League table momentarily and could have ended Sunday still within two points of Liverpool.

However, former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol still thinks Enzo Maresca can be happy with the point his side earned at Goodison Park and has explained why.

In the end, while a draw was probably a fair result, Sean Dyche thinks Everton could have found a winner.

Steve Nicol praises Chelsea for combating Everton

Nicol really admired Chelsea’s performance at Goodison, praising Maresca’s men for not allowing themselves to be bullied by Everton.

While they were unable to take all three points back to Stamford Bridge, Nicol thinks Maresca can still be pleased with what he saw from his side.

Speaking on ESPN after the game, the Liverpool legend said: “You’re asking for a different type of performance at Goodison with the weather against a team that relies on strength, just physical strength, that’s what Everton rely on, and they stood up to it.

“And so from that point of view, if you’re Maresca, then you are pleased. So not only can you play football and win games, but you can actually be physically strong against a big strong team and pick up points.”

A good point for Chelsea

Liverpool have increased their lead at the top of the table back to four points, but Chelsea’s draw with Everton has not hurt the Blues in their mission to secure Champions League qualification. That would have been their ultimate aim heading into this season.

In the 2023/24 campaign, Chelsea also lost 2-0 at Goodison, so getting a point this time around arguably shows progression.

All in all, then, Maresca certainly can be pleased, while his team are still on an impressive unbeaten run.

The Blues have not lost in the Premier League since they were beaten 2-1 by Liverpool back in October. It is one of jus two defeats that have been inflicted on them in the top flight this season, with the other coming against Manchester City.

And with games against Fulham and Ipswich Town next, there is no reason why that run cannot go on for a bit longer.
