Wilfried Gnonto has been told he has to start finding the back of the net on a more consistent basis if he is to see his dreams of Premier League stardom realised. The 21-year-old Italian international was tipped with a potential summer move to the English top flight, but never saw a deal materialise while team-mates such as Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray got big-money moves.
Gnonto previously came close to leaving the Whites for Everton only to see Leeds knock back that approach and there is talk the Toffees could return again now they have a new ownership. Leeds will hope Gnonto gets his Premier League chance with them next season by winning promotion this season, but for that to happen and for the Italian forward to progress, Leeds could do to start seeing a bigger return on the goals front.
Last season brought a return of nine goals for Gnonto, with eight in the Championship and one in the FA Cup. This season so far he's found the back of the net on four occasions in the league and each time has come in a game where Leeds have scored at least three goals.
Not guaranteed his starting place in Daniel Farke's team this season, Gnonto is being held back by his lack of goals according to Football League Paper columnist and former ex-professional Adam Virgo.
He says; "Every time I see him, he seems to do something, he seems to be creative.
“The guy has got caps for Italy so everybody knows that he’s a top-class player. The only thing holding him back is that he never seems to hit a consistent streak of goalscoring. Rectify that and he’s a Premier League player without a doubt."
