Report: Leicester boss explains decision to substitute experienced start at half time

Leicester City endured a nightmare before Christmas after they were beaten by Wolves on Sunday.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side fell to a 3-0 defeat to leave them just two points clear of the bottom three.

The Foxes have one of the toughest Christmas schedules and could face a huge fight on their hands to stay in the Premier League unless things change quickly.

Van Nistelrooy defended his decision to start Danny Ward after he was one of two Leicester players to be booed by the fans.

Nobody covered themselves in glory and at half time, the Leicester boss made two half-time changes to try and stop the rot.

One of the two players to be withdrawn at the break was Jannik Vestergaard, who was replaced by Wout Faes.

The Denmark international and Oliver Skipp were hooked at half time for Faes and Harry Winks, but Van Nistelrooy revealed that the defender had been suffering from illness and his decision wasn’t tactcial.

“He didn’t feel well at half-time,” the 48-year-old said. “It’s no major thing for the coming days.”

Leicester City want central defender in January transfer window

Defence has been a huge problem for the Foxes this season.

Robert Huth pointed out the ‘nuts’ Leicester stat which revealed that they had conceded 14 goals in the last five games – seven of those coming in the past two fixtures.

Without Mads Hermansen, who is outperforming every Premier League keeper, Leicester would be a whole lost worse off

According to The Athletic, a central defender is on the club’s shopping list for January.

Plenty of money has been spent in that area of the pitch but, with improvement needed and finances somewhat restricted, Leicester may have to look at some budget defensive options to bolster the squad.
