Gary Lineker sent message as Leicester City calamity taken apart

It being a Sunday night and Match of the Day 2, Gary Lineker was not on presenting duties for the BBC’s Premier League highlights show, but that didn’t stop the Leicester City hero from being name-checked when the Foxes 3-0 home defeat by Wolves was analysed.

Wolves went into the game at the King Power Stadium in the bottom three but with a new manager in Vitor Pereira after the sacking of Gary O’Neil last week.

And the hosts would have been buoyed by the knowledge that they were unbeaten in their previous six home games against Wolves, conceding just one goal - but all that quickly changed.

Goncalo Guedes opened the scoring for the visitors after just 19 minutes and Rodrigo Gomes capitalised on a defensive mix-up to double Wolves’ advantage after 36 minutes, with Matheus Cunha putting the game to bed with another goal before half-time.

Former Brighton striker Glenn Murray assessed the Foxes performance, going through each of the goals - but only after addressing the person not in the BBC studio.

He said: “Look away now Gary, because it's not pretty viewing from a Leicester City point of view.”

Looking at the first goal, he added: “We can see here Vestergaard, a big, strong, dominant centre-back. Yes, there's two players around him, but he's got to deal with the first ball. It's a straight ball.

“He gets a little bump from Goncalo Guedes, but Connor Cody doesn't get across, and I think you want more from your goalkeeper Danny Ward there. Three mistakes like that in the Premier League often lead to a goal.”

It was a similar story with the second, Murray adding: “We see here Ayew very aware of Gomez. He has a good look at him and then doesn't look at him again. Turns his back and Gomez thinks, ‘you know what, I'm going to have a cheeky little run in here’.

“Justin is nice and tight on Cunha. He's not aware of what is going on behind him, he thinks Ayew is still with Gomez. He actually lets this pass go, and all of a sudden it's it's a calamitous error from the goalkeeper again, but he's left with not much help from his players.”

And for the third, Murray was not much kinder, saying: “Cunha was always looking for the ball, a real bright spark and the heartbeat of the Wolves team. We see Soumare, he's in control of this situation, the right side of the player. Then all of a sudden just that one step there, to the wrong side, and it allows Cunha to get a shot on target.

“But again, I've got to highlight the goalkeeper unfortunately. He’ll be really disappointed when he sees his back. He gets good contact on the ball, but doesn't change the direction.

“What a difference a week makes because Wolves were fantastic. Leicester, on the other hand, have faced 82 shots in four games under Ruud van Nistelrooy, and that is not good going.”
