'Certainly worked': Alan Shearer hails Newcastle United tactical change that Eddie Howe…

Alan Shearer is happy once again after being very critical of Newcastle United.

On the back of Newcastle’s defeat to Brentford, Alan Shearer was seriously unhappy.

The Newcastle United legend went in on Eddie Howe’s side, with Shearer questioning their attitude.

He was right to do that, as it appeared that this Newcastle United team could only be motivated to play against one of the ‘big six’.

It was becoming a real problem, but Eddie Howe has found the solution. The Magpies have now won three in a row, beating teams they should be beating. It has resulted in Newcastle climbing back into the top half of the Premier League, whilst also setting up a Carabao Cup semi-final with Arsenal.

Newcastle United are suddenly on the up again, and Alan Shearer believes the Magpies’ change in fortunes has coincided with Eddie Howe changing Sandro Tonali’s position.

The £55million man is now operating as Newcastle’s deepest midfielder instead of Bruno Guimaraes, and Shearer has told The Rest Is Football podcast that the change has ‘certainly worked’.

“He switched things around in terms of Tonali in the midfield, which has certainly worked,” he said.

“And Tonali looks a really, really good player as well in the midfield.

“So yeah, it’s looking okay again for Newcastle. They’ve got to keep it up.”

Newcastle’s midfield is functioning perfectly after Sandro Tonali change

The decision to swap Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes has had a seismic impact on Eddie Howe’s side.

Everything has suddenly clicked into gear. Tonali is playing the best football of his career, and put in another impressive performance on Saturday during Newcastle’s 4-0 win over Ipswich.

Tonali gives Newcastle so much more solidity, while his running power is a huge asset. There were times on Saturday when he was the Magpies’ deepest player.

But he is also launching attacks from deep, getting Newcastle into dangerous positions. Bruno Guimaraes is finding himself in those dangerous positions, with the Toon skipper now free to impact the game in the final third.

He continued to do that on Saturday, and should have got more than the one assist he registered.

Eddie Howe’s tactical tweak has had an incredible impact, and Alan Shearer is delighted to see his beloved Newcastle United re-find their form. Long may it continue.
