Report: Premier League rivals join race to sign £20m Championship star in January

Newcastle United have their January transfer plans in place.

Newcastle must manoeuvre around PSR in the upcoming transfer window with the consensus that the club must sell before they can spend big money this summer.

Eddie Howe has a transfer wishlist which has been handed to sporting director Paul Mitchell. A right-winger, striker and goalkeeper are the priorities.

Newcastle’s win at Ipswich shows the quality they have in the starting XI but it’s clear that there needs to be more quality options who can come off the bench to help secure a return to European football.

Names discussed include PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko and Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo but each player would cost as much as £50million.

Newcastle want Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford but the latest transfer update puts a potential move for the 22-year-old in jeopardy.

Tottenham weigh up bid for James Trafford

Tottenham Hotspur are suffering from a goalkeeper injury crisis at the moment. They have been forced to play former Newcastle man Fraser Forster between the sticks due to an injury to Guglielmo Vicario.

The 36-year-old has conceded 22 goals in 11 games across all competitions, a stat that has forced manager Ange Postecoglu into action in January.

According to the Mirror, Trafford is a target for Spurs who are weighing up a £20m bid for the Championship keeper.

He is ahead of Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson and Sheffield Wednesday keeper Pierce Charles on Spurs’ wishlist.

Trafford nearly joined Newcastle in the summer but PSR forced them to withdraw any approach. The England under-21s star has played a big part in Burnley’s squad this season helping them go within three points off the top of the Championship.

The pressure is now on Mitchell to deliver one of Newcastle’s longstanding transfer targets.

James Trafford could replace Nick Pope

It’s no surprise that Spurs want Trafford when you look at his performances this season.

Toon goalkeeper Nick Pope is out with a knee injury but hasn’t set the world alight this season having conceded 18 goals in the Premier League so far.

Martin Dubravka has taken the reigns and only conceded one goal in three games since Pope’s injury. The signing of Trafford means that Pope has younger competition that will be challenging him for his spot as starting goalkeeper.

The 22-year-old is enjoying a fine season for Burnley so far keeping 12 clean sheets and only conceding nine goals in 21 games but has faced 24 shots less than Pope who has his defence to blame for that.

Name Appearances Clean sheets (League) Saves Goals conceded

Nick Pope 15 3 54 18

James Trafford 21 12 42 9

Pope can only boast four clean sheets across all competitions this campaign and will be eager to set the record straight upon his return.
