What Ruben Amorim told Manchester United fans after Ipswich is now more true than ever - opinion

Ruben Amorim sent a message to Manchester United supporters after his first match against Ipswich Town explaining why results in his opening few months could be disappointing.

Manchester United suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Bournemouth who won 3-0 at Old Trafford for the second consecutive season. The Red Devils failed to take their chances, however, the visitors were clinical and comfortably saw off United.

Many United supporters will now be panicking after such a poor result but now is the time to remain calm and trust the new manager. Amorim has already explained why it will take time and how the focus needs to be on the process to get to where they want to be as a team.

Ruben Amorim makes clear why Manchester United must be patient

Ruben Amorim told Manchester United supporters that the priority must be on implementing his new ideas on the squad over getting results. The Portugese coach explained after drawing 1-1 with Ipswich why there are likely to be teething problems, but everyone must stick together and look at the long-term goal.

The 39-year-old claims that United have two options – either putting plans in place for a quick fix in terms of immediate results or focusing on fixing things in the long term and building for sustained success. Amorim claims he has been brought in to implement the second option and has called for the supporters to show patience. He warned supporters that if they don’t ‘risk and suffer now’, in a year they will just be in the same place.

Speaking after his first game in charge, Amorim told the media: “We have two ways, forget the new idea and we try to cope, and next year at the same stage we’ll be here with the same problems. Or we start now – risk and suffer a little bit, and we’ll be better in the next year.”

The Old Trafford faithful will certainly need to hear this message again after the heavy defeat at the hands of Bournemouth. It was always clear that Amorim had been dealt a tough hand and it would take time for him to fix a squad that looked in disarray under the previous manager.
