Liverpool handed new referee verdict on Tottenham goal after Virgil van Dijk complaints

The latest Liverpool news as the Reds felt that James Maddison's opening goal for Tottenham should have been ruled out due to a foul in the build-up.

Virgil van Dijk gives out instructions during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur FC and Liverpool FC at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Virgil van Dijk was not happy with the decision to award a goal to Tottenham in the first half of the 6-3 win.

Liverpool have been told that it was the correct decision to allow James Maddison’s goal for Tottenham to stand during the 6-3 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The win saw the Reds increase their lead at the top of the Premier League table.

The game started in the perfect way for Liverpool with goals from Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister putting them 2-0 up. Maddison then halved the deficit for Tottenham in the 41st minute.

The goal was met with complaints from Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, who felt that there was a foul on Mac Allister in the build-up to the goal. However, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher didn’t agree.

“I think Dejan Kulusevski has his own foot stood on,” he said on Sky Sports’ ref watch. “It's not a foul, but again the referee has the perfect position as he's looking straight at it.”

The former referee, turned pundit, also gave his thoughts on Tottenham’s claim that they should have been awarded a penalty in the opening minutes. Maddison was again involved with Trent Alexander-Arnold making the challenge.

“I think he uses his body strength. Is it a penalty? Not for me,” Gallagher said.

“The referee two years ago refereed Gillingham vs Leicester. I felt this guy would go a long, long way.

“He's progressed quicker than I ever would have thought. He is the most talented referee to come through in the last two years to the Premier League. It's not a penalty.”

There were more goals to follow in the remainder of the match, Dominik Szoboszlai restored Liverpool’s two goal advantage before half time. Mohamed Salah then scored a brace to make it 5-1 to the Reds.

Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke scored for Spurs. But Liverpool wrapped up the game five minutes from time thanks to Diaz’s second goal of the game.
